A Complete Guide To Heavy Equipment Maintenance And Inspection.

Mechanic servicing a heavy truck engine

Most breakdowns announce themselves days in advance — a weeping hose, a slow crank, a track running hot. This guide covers the inspection routine our own mechanics use, so whether you rent from us or run your own iron, small problems stay small.

The 10-minute daily walkaround

Before the first start, circle the machine: fluid levels (engine oil, coolant, hydraulic), belt condition, hose chafing, tire cuts or track tension, lights and beacons, and any fresh leaks on the ground. Check the hour meter against the service sticker — if a 500-hour service is due this week, call it in now, not Friday.

What a real 50-point inspection covers

A serious pre-hire inspection goes far beyond "it starts and moves." Ours documents brakes and steering, hydraulic pressures under load, pin and bushing play, undercarriage wear percentages, electrical draw, cab safety devices, and fluid analysis. Ask for the report — a yard that can't produce one is guessing.

Service intervals that matter

Engine oil and filters every 250–500 hours depending on duty; hydraulic oil sampling every 500; coolant and final-drive oil at 1,000; undercarriage measurement every service. Dusty or high-heat work shortens all of these — desert jobs should halve air-filter intervals at minimum.

Undercarriage: where the money hides

Tracks and rollers are half the lifetime cost of a dozer or excavator. Keep frames clean (packed mud accelerates wear 2–3x), alternate travel direction, avoid high-speed reverse, and measure bushing wear before it damages sprockets. A $400 measurement saves a $20,000 rebuild.

When to call instead of wrenching

Operators should handle greasing, filters, and walkarounds. Anything involving hydraulic pressure, structural cracks, or fault codes goes to a certified tech. On a Gradeline rental that call is free and answered 24/7 — and if we're down over four hours, the loaner is on us.
